As if it wasn’t enough to make searingly brilliant dance music as @lcdsoundsystem, Mr James Murphy just has to go and be some seriously smart and charming dude.
Not to mention, in his inviting, cerebrally sexy, bear-like form, he has to be rivalling Guy Garvey as the most huggable man in pop.
This eve I stumbled across a @mssngpeces interview with Murphy, from 2006, that they’ve recently edited down to a 9 minute Murphy fix, for all those who are currently experiencing withdrawal symptoms since LCD Soundsystem played their last gig.
I just love his response to the question from behind camera about modern technology, “Do all these liberating tools allow artists to make better work?”
“No. Anymore than computer graphics finally made visual art better. Like photoshop has finally got us out of the old Ansel Adams garbage that we were stuck in beforehand. Or, illustrator means that we’re not limited in the way the Dutch Masters were. Now we don’t have to deal with the crushing creative paralysis that Picasso suffered, that Magritte suffered…you know, like how much aesthetic freedom we all now feel. No one feels any more aesthetic freedom from computer tools!”
While, I’m sad to say, it’s unlikely that I will ever get close enough to James Murphy for that desired hug, I can take solace in the fact that we do share a little ‘something’.
